Better Rail Stations

This paper is the Northern Way's response to the Department for Transport's informal consultation on the "Better Rail Stations" report prepared by Chris Green and Peter Hall. We agree with the overall finding that the current passenger satisfaction rating with stations is well below what should be achieved and that the level of improvement needed is substantial. The Department's announcement that up to £50m is to be made available to Network Rail for station enhancements is therefore a valuable start that will also increase the benefits of overall levels of investment in the operational railway. However it is also inescapable that if overall passenger satisfaction with stations is to improve significantly their overall end to end journey experience also needs to improve.
